Early Childhood Ministry Assistant
Position Summary
The SSPC Early Childhood Ministry Assistant (part-time position) provides a safe, loving, and engaging environment for children from infancy through preschool age during Sunday morning worship, other worship services of SSPC, and VBS.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide a steady, reliable adult who is responsible for the care and teaching of our babies/preschoolers during Sunday morning worship, special events, and seasonal activities.
- Work effectively with volunteers, training them on the daily routines of the early childhood program.
- Create age-appropriate, Bible-based learning experiences that help children discover God’s love and learn foundational Bible concepts and stories.
- Foster a welcoming, inclusive environment where every child and family feels valued and cared for.
- Ensure classrooms meet safety, cleanliness, and child protection standards.
- Take responsibility for the classroom: maintain classroom supplies, bulletin boards, and keep the space clean and organized.
- Collect and appropriately maintain records such as attendance, required parent paperwork, or medical needs.
- Be aware of special needs among our children and take necessary steps to ensure their safety and comfort (for example, medical allergies or sensitive family situations)
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding activities, events, and ministry opportunities, as well as the progress and needs of their child. Create a simple monthly newsletter.

familiar with SSPC emergency procedures and be able to lead in providing safety
in an emergency situation.
Qualifications
- A personal Christian faith and a desire to serve children and families through ministry.
- Experience in early childhood education, childcare, preschool, or children’s ministry preferred.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability and willingness to build relationships with children, parents, and volunteers
- Ability to work collaboratively with church staff and maintain confidentiality.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Willing to complete the SSPC online Child Protection Training, successfully complete a background check, and follow the SSPC Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policies.
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
Terms of Employment:
- This person will report directly to the Director of Christian Education (DCE) and the Session through the Personnel Team. Week-to-week supervision and direction for all aspects of the position are provided by the DCE and the Christian Education Ministry Team. An annual review will be done by the DCE, CE Team and Personnel Team. The Personnel Team will review the adequacy of compensation annually.
- This position is part-time, compensated on an hourly basis at $20.00 per hour and paid monthly on the 15th.
- The Early Childhood Ministry Assistant will arrive promptly each Sunday at 10:30 and remain until 12:30 on Sunday mornings.
- On the rare occasion of a last minute change in schedule (due to illness or emergency) the Ministry Assistant will contact the DCE as soon as possible.
- Health and Pension Benefits are not provided.
- Unpaid vacation is 4 Sundays per year, to be scheduled in advance with the DCE.
- Work days include: Sunday morning worship, Quarterly Parents Night Out, Christmas Eve, Christmas Concert, Ash Wednesday, Maundy-Thursday, Vacation Bible School.
