Ministry of Worship & Celebration

Christian worship joyfully ascribes all praise and honor,
glory and power to the triune God.
In worship the people of God acknowledge God present in the world and in their lives.
As they respond to God’s claim and redemptive action in Jesus Christ,
believers are transformed and renewed.
In worship the faithful offer themselves to God
and are equipped for God’s service in the world.

The Ministry of Worship and Celebration exists to lift God’s people in joyful worship as they come to praise God and celebrate his work in their lives, seeking to be equipped to serve him faithfully in the world. Through Word and Sacrament, music, art, drama, offering our gifts, and  special services, this Ministry Unit fosters the feeling of: “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’” (Psalm 122:1)

Music and Arts Ministry: This team oversees all music and use of the arts in the life of the congregation, under the supervision of the Director of Music and Arts. They also coordinate any performances by guest musicians/artists and/or concert series that may occur during the year.

Worship Planning & Liturgists: This group oversees the planning and implementation of the worship services, including any special worship services throughout the year. This team works closely with the pastor in making sure there that worship themes are carried out in accordance with sermon series and the liturgical calendar, and that the worship schedule is regularly reviewed, recommending any changes if necessary. This team is also responsible for preparing the elements for the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper whenever it is observed, coordinating the servers for the Lord’s Supper, and coordinating the Liturgist training and scheduling.

Hospitality: This team is responsible for making sure the hospitality of the congregation is immediately evident and apparent to visitors who worship with our congregation so that they are warmly welcomed and feel connected from the moment they arrive at SSPC. This team is responsible for recruiting, training, and scheduling ushers/greeters. This team regularly reviews and updates the usher guidelines & responsibilities and ensures the ushers prepare the sanctuary for use prior to worship services, and for cleaning and closing the sanctuary following worship. This team regularly visits other congregations to see how they welcome visitors and suggests and implements any changes necessary to make visitors feel welcome.

Decorations: This group of talented people ensures that our worship space is decorated appropriately for whichever liturgical season we are in, so that all worshippers might be enriched in their worship and God might be glorified. Maintaining the flower calendar is part of the work of this group. They work closely with the pastor to determine if any special decorations are necessary to achieve a certain feel that will enable people to better experience God within particular worship services, especially during high holy times such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter.

Weddings: The Reformed Tradition emphasizes the nature of the wedding as a worship service. This team is responsible for ensuring that the weddings that take place at SSPC are first and foremost worshipful affairs. Beyond that, they assist the Wedding Coordinator and the bride and groom in making the necessary arrangements with the congregation, informing them of the congregation policies, coordinating information with the church staff, and, if necessary, directing the wedding ceremony.

Co-Moderators:  Randy Lowe and Rachel Fowlkes
